A recent report by Just Group has uncovered a concerning trend: a significant number of eligible pensioner homeowners in the UK are not claiming the benefits they are entitled to. The study reveals that a staggering 79% of those eligible are failing to claim any benefits, resulting in an average loss of £1,231 per household per year. Ives & Co, leading solicitors serving Nottingham and Kent, can assist with wills and probate.
This revelation prompts a critical discussion on the importance of ensuring that pensioner homeowners are aware of and claim the benefits designed to support their financial well-being during retirement. The report highlights that one in 10 pensioners claiming benefits are receiving less than they are entitled to, missing out on an average of £476 of additional income annually.
The report’s findings emphasize the substantial impact that unclaimed benefits can have on pensioner households. In some cases, the additional income uncovered reached a remarkable £143.43 per week, illustrating the magnitude of unclaimed entitlements. For instance, a pensioner couple in Surrey, previously not receiving any benefits, discovered they were eligible for £111.30 a week Pension Credit and £32.13 a week Council Tax Reduction, resulting in an astounding £7,458 of extra income per year.
Pension Credit is particularly emphasized as a gateway to various other benefits, including free NHS dental care, cold weather payments, and a free TV license for those over 75. Despite the potential advantages, a substantial number of eligible pensioners are not accessing these crucial benefits.
The report, based on in-depth interviews with clients seeking equity release advice in 2023, highlights that 38% of these individuals were entitled to benefits. However, a significant majority—79%—were not claiming at all, and 9% were claiming less than their entitlement.
As these findings come to light, it becomes increasingly crucial for pensioner homeowners to proactively explore and claim the benefits available to them. Whether it’s Pension Credit or other key benefits, understanding entitlements can significantly enhance financial stability during retirement. Initiatives to raise awareness, simplify application processes, and encourage community outreach can contribute to ensuring that every eligible pensioner homeowner maximizes their entitlements, fostering a more secure and prosperous retirement for all.
